As mentioned above, PocketVision is an AI-powered app that is designed to make it easier for people with vision impairment or low vision to read better. It uses the power of HONOR’s AI and quad-camera technology at its core to provide an enhanced reading experience for people across the world, which makes it an affordable alternative than some of the other options, like magnifiers and typoscopes, available in the market. The PocketVision app is developed by Eyecoming — a social company that provides integrated hardware and software solutions for people with visual impairments. And as of now, it offers two applications for the same, namely —PocketVision and Eyecoming. With Eyecoming, the idea is to connect visually impaired people with volunteers through smart glasses. The smart glasses are capable of recording video in real-time, which can then be leveraged by the volunteers to help blind or short-sighted people in solving their tasks remotely. On the other hand, with the PocketVision app, things are slightly different. As, instead of having the need for a separate hardware device to aid in reading, the company uses an app that leverages the power of HONOR’s AI to deliver an enhanced reading experience. For which, it offers three different modes –
Text-to-Speech Mode – Powered by HONOR HiAI and Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, the mode helps in converting pictures to text in a much faster and reliable manner. Using which, it can then easily narrate the text from books, documents, menus, and more. Zoom-in Mode – The mode relies on HONOR’s quad-camera and telephoto lens to allow users to zoom into text using the volume buttons on their device and make the smallest of text sizes larger, less blurry, and easier to view. Negative Image Mode – For people who find it difficult to see certain colors, the mode offers a range of color filters to enhance the text and the contrast of printed material.
Commenting on the launch of the app, George Zhao, President of HONOR said, “At HONOR, we believe in the relentless pursuit of innovation; creating cutting edge technologies which make a positive impact on the world.” He also added, “Harnessing the power of the HONOR 20 and HONOR 20 PRO’s next-generation AI capabilities and pro-grade camera technology, PocketVision aims to level the playing field for the visually impaired, giving this community a portable, affordable solution to other reading aids available in the market. With the launch of this app, we hope to create an enhanced reading experience for people all around the world, enabling a greater sense of independence and giving people with low vision the confidence to unlock their potential and pursue their passions.”
PocketVision app Availability
The PocketVision app offers support for English, Portuguese, German, Spanish, Italian, and Chinese language, and can be downloaded for free starting today through the Huawei AppGallery. Albeit, the app can be downloaded on all HONOR smartphones, the company suggests that it works better on the HONOR 20 and HONOR 20 Pro, which come with the AI-powered quad-camera technology.
